Extra-Curricular Activities
At Hornsby South Public school we are very lucky to offer a variety of extra-curricular activities in the school. Most of our activities are run by our talented staff members who are just as passionate as the students. We believe extra-curricular activities serve as more than just a means for students to explore their interests and talents, they also build friendships, develop a sense of belonging, and improve their social and emotional well-being.
This year we have the following extra-curricular activities:
Chess
Chess is offered to students as part of our enrichment programs at Hornsby South.
Beginners and Intermediate
Children may elect to be involved in a beginners group where they start to learn the fundamentals of the game. Students are coached by a professional Chess coach from the Academy of Chess. They discuss chess moves and practise these in games with other students.
Advanced
Once students are proficient at the rudimentary elements of chess, they progress to the Advanced Chess group on a Thursday morning before school. They are coached in many aspects of chess to allow them to play highly developed games.
Currently, the times for 2024 are:
Wednesday 12:55-1:40
Thursday 8-9 and 12:55-1:40
Debating
We offer a dedicated debating program for Stage 3 students who are eager to develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills. Guided by our experienced teaching staff, students form teams and learn how to research topics, build logical arguments, and express their opinions confidently and respectfully. Additionally, teams have the exciting opportunity to represent the school in the Premier’s Debating Challenge, where they compete against students from other schools in the region. This program not only boosts self-esteem but it also prepares students to become thoughtful, articulate, and respectful members of their communities.
Earth Club
Earth Club is a popular activity where a group of enthusiastic students come together to learn about and take action for the environment. Earth Club encourages students to develop a sense of responsibility and care for the natural world through fun and educational activities such as growing succulents, recycling projects, litter clean-ups, gardening and creating awareness posters. By participating in the club, students not only gain knowledge but also become active citizens who contribute positively to their school and local community.

Among our staff we have very talented and dedicated staff members who run dance groups from years 3-6. It is fun, vibrant and everyone can join. The students have multiple opportunities to perform at school events throughout the year, as well as performing on a professional stage at Wakakirri.
